Chapter Twenty Four

Paisley gasped and Zelef came to his feet simultaneously.

“Mr. Pyrogan, you will release the judge’s child at this very instant!” Zelef commanded, slapping his hands down on the desk top.

Paisley heard the words and saw the actions unfolding before her but she couldn’t speak…couldn’t move from her spot behind the bench. Her mouth moved in a puckered motion like that of a fish.

She could no longer see or hear her son as he was bound inside the wound up roll of the dragon’s wing.

Mr. Pyrogan had partially completed his change from snake man to dragon. He still had his human type scaled legs but his upper body was broad chested and winged and his head had grown larger and more fierce.

The red eyes continued to glow at her as she tried to think of what to do next. What if he was smothering her son?

“This is your last warning…” Zelef said and Paisley could hear a certain authority in his voice she’d only heard once before when he’d told her she must take her new position seriously if she didn’t want to incur the further wrath of the Tribunal.

That was when Mr. Pyrogan made a decision. With two flaps of his empty wing, he ascended upwards and disappeared through the portal.

He’d stolen her son.

She jumped to her feet and ran towards the portal. She was going in after him. It was the only thought her mind could form at the moment. She had to save her baby.

A strong hand clamped around her arm and held her in place.

“You don’t want to do that.”

She looked up into the pale face of Camden and he was looking at her with absolute certainty.

“That’s my child, I have to go…” she flinched and struggled to remove her arm from his grasp. She had to get going. Had to get her son back.

“I’ll go get him. You’ll be powerless there and you won’t last five minutes. That is not a place for humans.”

Paisley didn’t care. If it wasn’t a place for humans, didn’t that mean her son wouldn’t survive long there either?

“I have to go, please let go!” she yelled at him, her throat raw with emotion. She was trying to hold herself together on pure adrenaline.

“I’ll go. You stay here and take care of the girl. I’ll be back as soon as I can.” He pushed her away from the portal with one hard shove.

She flew backwards and landed on the couch with a hard thump.

“Please!” she screamed at him.

He turned to look at her and she locked eyes with him.

“Camden, he’s my life…please bring him back to me.” Her voice cracked as she choked back tears.

With one quick nod of the head, he was up through the portal and gone.

Camden entered the dark realm and heard the snickering of the wood demons as soon as he stepped through the portal’s gateway.

The rumors had already started flowing around that the son of the new grievance judge had been stolen and was being held there in the underworld.
